Goblin Town

This may be the last post this year. I realize this was my laziest year of posting and I wish it hadn't been such a clusterfuck. But I'm hoping to maybe continue to keep up the blog with once a week posts. I also have some other plans to build on the blog for anyone that might be interseted in seeing more besides just music. Hopefully you enjoyed what i posted this year. There was plenty I wish I had gotten up but I still have plenty more to eventually ad. Hopefully you had a good Halloween and I hope to see you back soon.

This is a track that's a remix from the Goblin's song in the animated version of the Hobbit. I figure sine Goblins are Halloween affiliated even if those particular Goblins aren't this still counts...right?

Devil Within

I guess the guy above is called Kid Devil...of course he is.

This track is by a band I've featured in the past called Midnight Juggernauts. They're from Australia. They're very similar to Cut Copy and Justice, plus they have a lot of haunted tracks!

Skull-Eyed

You want demonic garage rock? Look no further then Texas. The Mind Spiders (which sounds creepy enoughas it is) are fromTexas and they specialize in grimy licks and haunted vocals. They just put out a new album this year and are relatively young.

I'm hoping to double or triple up on the posts tomorrow to better fulfill my full Halloween posts. Stay tuned.

Man or Astro-man? - Munsters Theme

Quick post. This is just a real short, perfectly executed by the band Man or Astro-Man. They're from Alabama and have some great surf rock/Sci-fi/Halloween tunes. They recently got back together to do some recording. You may have heard them previously from a relatively famous cover of MST3K.

The Witches of Eastwick

I don't know if I'm the only one on the planet who watched Eastwick when it was on ABC a few years back. It wasn't especially good but a new show about witches in October pulled me in. They canceled it after an appropriate 13 episodes though. Theres also a movie with Jack Nicholson which...I think I've seen. It was the 80s, Im pretty sure Jack was coked out of his mind.

This is a hip hop remix from Cookin' Soul's Night of the Living Dead 3 mixtape. Featuring Big L and Big Pun its got the menace and spooky vibes you need for Halloween.

Dracula

I decided to start to dig into some music archives that were a little more accessible due to my primary computer still being down. This one is from the great Lucky Dube from Jamaica. There's actually a great Reggae Halloween blog over at Distinctly Spooky Jamaican Sounds and while I haven't checked there's a good chance this has been posted over there at some point in the archives. Jamaica is one trip I'd love to make, although I really wish I had been able to go back during the roots era of the late 70s and early 80s. Someday I'll make it though, maybe I'll find some great Halloween tracks if I do.

All Hell

The Above picture is of the Hell Lords who are the various entities from Marvel Comics that inhabit Hell and occasionally pose as Satan. Its so ridiculous and is exactly the reason why I love comics.

This song is from a new semi western semi indie artist called Daughn Gibson. He's not that country, but he does have that outlaw vibe of someone like Johnny Cash. This is a pretty haunting track with some deep atmospherics.

I'm trying a new way to display files. We'll see how Soundcloud works.

It's a Nightmare

This is a track by a great new band called Apache Dropout. They good be on any old school garage comp but they do what they do well. Loose and scratchy vocals, weird effects in the middle of songs and wobbly fuzzed out guitar. It's just raw and absolutely perfect at what it does.

It Gets Dark

This is a great poster by the artist Martin Ansin. Based in South America he has done a wide variety of prints for nearly every Universal Monster movie including the Wolfman and the Mummy. Still no Frankenstein though, yet.

Also I just wanted to add I fixed any old songs that weren't playable or downloadable. And to download the divshare player songs what you need to do is click share and it will allow you to download.

The next track is a Halloween titled song from a vaguely Halloween Titled band called Holy Ghost! They are from New York and if you like electronic esque dance music that isn't too digital or too guitar driven they are damn near perfect. I think they're a great hybrid and for what they do they're awesome at it.

Back to the Grave

I'm not sure where Howler got the inspiration for this track. It might be due to the compilations of Garage Rock titled Back from the Grave, or maybe they just wanted to write a spooky sounding song. Either way, its another one for the Ghost Town.

Howler is actually a local band, I'm not sure if they bill themselves from Minneapolis or St. Paul but they released their debut this year. It was really solid. Although some people were divided, its got elements of garage rock, post punk and surf rock, even some bigger sounding stuff. I could see them growing into a pretty popular band some day, but I also wouldn't see them surprised if they never made it past touring smaller club venues.

Click share and then it will allow you to download.

Song for the Dead

Wow, I was browsing the blog to make sure I hadn't posted this one. Its a blazing creepy sonic nightmare from Queens of the Stone Age called Song for the Dead. They're one of my favorite rock bands but the last time I was supposed to see them about 8 years ago Josh Homme the lead singer had to cancel the show. Dave Grohl actually played drums on this track and the whole album so if you notice it has an awesome beat, there you go.

Still working on the computer troubles, hopefully will be back up and running properly sometime tomorrow night.

The Mummy's Shroud

I had a little trouble in getting a post up today. My main computer where I have most of the music ready and easily available to me to upload is currently...almost undead. But I should have it back up and running smoothly. It was my B-Day this weekend so I haven't had as much time to devote to things like having a working computer.

I went back to the great Scientist Rids the Worlds of Vampires album. Now the thing about Scientist albums are that they are dub albums, so they are basically remixes of reggae song instrumentals. As such they don't necessarily have spooky lyrics but usually there's a theme around each album whether its horror movies, videogames or comics. Some of the songs on this album actually sound spooky and some just have those particular names. Its hard not to like an album cover with art this good no matter what your opinion on the music is.

Gangnam Busters

I saw this and it was simply to good not to add to the blog. I normally try hit on more rarities but this is a pretty fun mashup. Plus you can blast it at any Halloween shindigs and it should get people going. If you haven't seen Gangnam Style I don't know what I can add. Same goes for Ghostbusters. But the mp3 is here.

Calvanes - Horror Pictures

I realize I'm still a few posts behind. I'll get caught up soon. Hopefully this weekend. Even though its my birthday I should have a little time.

Thought I'd follow up my Bollock Brothers post from the other day with another song specifically about horror movies. Titled Horror Pictures this is a Doo Wop song from the late 50s. Its the type of thing I can imagine being piped over a drive-in sound system as a bad sci fi flick like the Brain that Wouldn't Die is loaded into the projector.

The Insane Warrior - Then You Hear Footsteps

This was billed as the soundtrack to a horror movie that doesn't exist. Influenced by John Carpenter, The Exorcist and other classic horror films its a mash between something like DJ Shadow and the soundtrack to something like The Thing or Halloween.

This was ultimately an alias of RJD2. It is a really great album with a lot of strange moments and many of the songs build and coalesce into something completely different from the way they start. This doesn't have lyrics but its got a spooky title, some haunting moments and you can dance to it...maybe.

Don Hinson and the Rigormorticians - Riboflavin Flavored, Non Carbonated, Poly-unsaturated Blood

I had this album on random a few weeks back and this great track came up. The first thing I thought of when listening was all those old Haunted Cereals from Count Chocula to Booberry. Most of these cereals you can get except Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy.

The whole album by Don Hinson is a great companion pieces to albums by Bobby Boris Pickett and Zacherly. It's got a strange vibe going everywhere from surf inspired songs to even stuff that sounds like it could be a girl group.

The Bollock Brothers - Horror Movies

So I am admittedly a little behind. But I will get caught up. This is the second track from the Bollock Brothers that's appeared on this blog. The first being Drac's Back. This is another weird new wave track titled Horror Movies. The best song that this blog has featured it is not, but it still has a solid groove. This song could actually probably be remixed into something great. Mostly just about watching horror movies, it gives shoutouts to classics like Frankenstein and Dracula and more recent films from the 60s and seventies.

Mad Monster Party

This is a great post for multiple reasons. 1. I learned about a fantastically weird game called Monster Party and 2. This song by Ethel Ennis sounds like what should be the theme to a 007esque spy movie if all the characters were also Monsters. I say that because it has the sweeping orchestral type of music that would always occur in any of the James Bond movies. Really its the theme to a 1967 Animated Comedy by Rankin Bass.

Originally beginning her career in the 50s she's still recording music to this day. Her most recent release was was 2005's Ennis Anyone? Ethel Ennis, Live at Montpelier!

Spooky

I'm never quite sure how I feel about instrumentals. I mean, I love em, and I can usually get that 50's horror vibe from a lot of them if that's what they're going for but I realize sometimes if one comes on it might be hard to identify as strictly something Halloween related. But the lurching guitar licks that speed up and slow down and use unique effects all make this a great Halloween instrumental.

Supposedly George Barnes made one of the first ever recordings of an electric guitar. Primarily more jazz oriented this song could also serve as a great spy soundtrack theme. It's hard not to imagine fast cars, alley fights and kidnapping of beautiful women.

I Think She Knows I Put a Spell On Her

This is from a compilation of mashups earlier in the decade called the Bride of Monster Mash. It was an annual series for a few years. Some are great, some are not that great. This is one of my favorites. Obviously a classic Halloween tune, I think the underlay of all the different songs under Screamin' Jay Hawkins vocals makes this a great tune...and just a little more danceable.

Night of the Sadist

This is an old garage rock jam. It was recorded multiple times both as Night of the Sadist and as the slightly less threatening Night of the Phantom. Larry and the Blue Notes are originally a Texas band and this is without a doubt their signature song.

Its rising and falling guitar lick underpining a scary night time tale with some staggering drums makes for a great track. More songs and more links to come. Stay tuned!
