This is a really cool track. I hadn't noticed it until just recently. Its a remix of Christoher Walken reading the Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and remixed over some haunting music. It took me a second to Christopher Walken and I was instantly amazed. Its really good, he's such a great actor and really knows how to use his voice to express emotion and cadence.

King Khan and BBQ Show - Zombies

This is a screen capture from a game called Left 4 Dead. You play against and as Zombies. It is amazingly well done and I was absolutely hooked on playing it a few years back. I spent most of winter '08-09 playing it all the time. Its filled with cool moments and the levels are all really fun to play. Its also incredibly rage inducing during the wrong moments but its a great game come Halloween.

Zombies by King Khan and BBQ is completely not for kids. Slitting wrists, gratuitous swearing. I love it, but just an FYI you might not want to play it while answering the door on Halloween. King Khan and BBQ are great to see live. BBQ plays drums and occasionally guitar at the same time. King Khan plays guitar and sometimes crossdresses and they have some incredible garage rock songs.

A few days ago I was watching the incredibly bad Sleepaway Camp trilogy. It's not just bad, it is the worst series of horror movies I've ever seen. At least it competes with Leprechaun. I'm not sure which one is truly the worst and I hope nobody ever goes in depth enough to find out.

Amazingly though, as bad as the movies are, the second one has some decent music in it. One of the songs is Stranger in the Night by the Orange County punk band Agent Orange. It's a good tune and the movie also features a few songs by Canadian metal group Anvil who had a documentary out just last year.

Anyways, enjoy Agent Orange and whatever spooky things you got going on tonight. There's still a few more posts coming and I will try to catch it up tomorrow.

I realize I totally spaced on posting last night so I'm going to try and make it up today. I think I may be 2 posts behind for the month. It's a busy time and I've had extra work to do. I don't even currently have a costume set up for the weekend yet. I feel terrible, I wanted to put all my time into this one idea but I never got around to doing it/ordering the parts I needed. I realize now I need to start planning my costumes months in advance, at least if I want them to be as crazy as I'd like them to be.

This is a great old school track from Whodini. The album art isn't from the album this song appeared on but it just looked to cool not to post. I need to get myself a cream colored suit, even if there's no way I could pull it off like that.

This is one of the better remixes I've ever heard of the Ghostbusters theme. It's not as recgnizable, yet it still keeps intact most of the song. A lot of Ray Parker Jr.'s vocals are taken out but still your head is still in a Ghostbusting mood listening to it.

The original was at one time my favorite song ever. Its catchy as hell, Huey Lewis be damned, is just too fun and amazingly still holds up as a great song. Some 80s stuff sounds really dated but compared to a lot of more recent sounding music this could appear on an album today without sounding out of place.

Awkward 80s pop layered with vocals from Freddy Krueger at weird and inopportune moments? Yes. Checkmark. That is exactly what I want. Sure this song may not have sold a million copies...or any, but its so over the top cheesy. From the sub Peter Gabriel synth rhythm to the absolutely ridiculous guitar solo that appears out of nowhere and disappears into a bottomless abyss this song is perfectly weird.

It's funny to think about a character becoming so popular that in someone's mind this was a good idea. No doubt that person was someone else's boss, which just makes me sad. I wonder if there's someone out there who has the Freddy Krueger album on his resume?

This is a poster from the Alamo Drafthouse's Fantastic Fest. It's an annual festival filled with all kinds of offbeat weird movies. A combination of all types of midnight features, kung-fu and foreign type flicks.

This song is fantastic, when I first heard it, it caught me by surprised. It reminded me a lot of some of George Harrison's latter seventies stuff. It's got a weird mix of synth and doo wop. Enjoy it.

This is a live cover of one of my favorite songs ever, Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London. I can't listen to it without singing along, I even do the howling. Its just got a perfect simple piano part and is crazy fun.

This version makes the piano a little bouncier and opens up with Zevon addressing the crowd before the song really kicks off. The audience starts clapping along before the song gets going and then he lets out a long high pitched howl before things jump into action.

Originally I was gonna go with some cuter Cookie Monster art but I found this image and its just the right amount of completely twisted and awesome. The artist is Rhys Cooper. He does a lot of very cool work on prints and other things.

The song is Monster by Killer Mike. The beat is has these really dark and cool guitar parts behind a pounding beat and Killer Mike's voice which roars over the top and can make anything sound scary. He's one of my favorite artists and although he sounds loud and fierce in his songs, I've met him in real life and he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met.

He just put out a new album called Pl3dge or Pledge Allegiance to the Grind III. I highly advocate you pick it up if you are into hip hop in the least. Its fun and smart.

Screaming synths and haunting vocals. That's all I need. Although its not quite my favorite genre, I do have a soft spot for any synthpop from the 80s. This song gets more manic and twisted the longer it goes on.

Its easy to imagine Paul Haig as being more post-punk then his synth-like solo work if this was the first song you heard. Definitely excited about this song. I may have to add it to my playlist for the next couple weeks when I will be lucky enough to DJ some of my favorite selections live.

One of my favorite memories growing up was on all of the completely random holidays that the Sci-Fi channel would run Twlight Zone marathons. Sometimes they would go on for entire weekends and others just a single day. Despite this being a good memory, incredibly rarely would I watch an entire episode. I think its because most of the time I remember the Twilight Zone marathon being on it was either the 4th of July so I was trying to get outside or it was New Years and I was probably playing videogames I got around X-mas.

Today's song is by the Dutch band Golden Earring. They are a band I am not too familiar with but they blend hard rock and synth. Kind of like of you Told the members of the Police and Thin Lizzy to fuse together. This song is exceptionally long, must have been the classic rock in them when recording.

If you go looking, you'll find there's probably hundreds of remixes of Thriller. Most of them are aweful. Today I have two, one from Bird Peterson and another from Louis La Roche. Neither can top the original but both provide a slightly different sound and make the song sound a little more recent as in the case of the Louis La Roche version or completely twist it and just make it thud as in the Bird Peterson version. Not quite as brilliant as in 1982 but still a interesting twist.

The Comateens are probably one of those bands that should have graced this blog by now. Like a new wave version of the Cramps this song is particularly spooky. All kinds of effects come in and out around the spooky flickering guitar riff.

Like any good slightly spooky band they've also done a cover of the Munsters theme. So far I'm making good on the one song a day, although I'm still one behind. This is pretty good compared to the last few years where I've had to put up a couple posts a day when I started slacking off.

Anyone got any good tips for carving pumpkins, I'd like to try my hand at making a really good one once.

He formed the Monster Raving Looney Party, played with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Keith Moon and released an album the BBC called the worst ever. He was Screaming Lord Sutch and he was a character. A once in a lifetime type. He made some great songs and some not so great songs.

This one is a favorite of mine though and perfect for this time of year. It's raw and ragged but I have no doubt he cared and it works anyways. This sounds like the theme to a bad late 60's cartoon. Who knows maybe someone will make it someday. I love it.

Pre dawn corpses come alive! Today I have a followup to yesterday's track from Balzac, since they were influenced by the Misfits, I thought I might as well add a Misfits track. It's been awhile since the last one I posted which was Skulls if I remember right.

I was watching Shaun of the Dead today and remembered what a great film it really is. Its so simple but the relationships are all fun, and they ratchet up tension without somehow getting overly serious and it that makes it feel more real as they still joke while mad. That's the biggest criticism I have with dramatic movies is when people never joke or laugh despite terrible/scary things happening to them.

Yesterday was my birthday and I showed the Burbs on my Garage using a projector and my ps2 with the sound coming out of a guitar amp. It was a nice boogleg setup complimented with a bonfire and a couch found in someone elses yard. I just wish it wasn't get cold so soon. I'd like to do it all again.

This is one of those songs that takes you a moment to realize how awesome it is. The guitars are fast, the drums are a series of pulsating hammers and the vocals are viking growls and howls. But it works, the melodies are awesome, plus they're yelling about space vampires so you can't go wrong with that.

Balzac is a Misfit influenced japanese band that's released a ton of albums. They seem to have evolved away from the hardcore shredding of their early stuff but its still pretty raw and loud. I would love to see them play. I've never been to a lot of hardcore or punk shows but this gets my blood going. Just gotta make sure I keep away from those space vampires.

I was originally going to go with a picture from the recent Nic Cage flick Season of the Witch. Then however, I realized it is one of the worst modern movies I have ever seen. I watch a lot of bad movies and usually its not painful especially if you know it didn't cost anything to make like a lot of cheap 80s movies. However not only did it make 90 million dollars but they spent nearly 40 million on making it. Just sad to know all around.

Anyways this blog is supposed to be about the evil not the depressing. With all the Frankensteining, Werewolfing and Draculizing going on, I can't neglect the classic Demon. Not only that this song is done by a band called the Witches so it's thoroughly haunted and there's not a single Nic Cage to be found! Good news. By the way, do yourself a favor and watch Wicker Man, that is a terrible movie that is so bad it puts you in a Zen State of mind as you can't even be angry, you're just confused and your mind goes blank after watching it.

I used a picture of the Fright Night poster. The original not the remake. Even though I was not all that into Fright Night, it was a vampire film, and that is a fantastic poster. I've always liked horror films that take place in the middle of the suburbs. The Burbs and many of the Halloween sequels are perfect examples. I'm kind've missing having cable and watching the Horror marathons they run around Halloween. I might have to get hooked up just in time for the latter half of the month.

Anyways, this is a song by The Mountain Goats. Some people are huge fans of John Darnielle's voice but he can write good songs. This one starts off simple but starts to get bloody by the end.

George Carter - Ghost Woman Blues

I haven't posted much music more than 5 decades old in doing this blog. There's two reasons, one, its much harder to find and two, I'm not into much before the 1950s. However I love early blues music. The only bad thing is that there isn't much of it out there. A lot of it just never got recorded. The stuff that did though is usually excellent.

This song by George Carter is perfect early blues. He's got a great voice and his rhythms are great. When he howls towards the end of the song, even through deminished recording you can still feel it. It's really haunting more so when you put yourself into the time, imagine hearing this in a Juke Joint before stumbling out into a gravely road in the middle of the country with only darkness as a blanket over the top of you. Back before all the roads were illuminated. I would have been singlehandedly humming and also trying to forget this song at the same time.

I wanted to make sure I got some hip hop up, its not always as easy as finding something that's horror song when its not rockabilly or garage or surf. Not that its hard to find dark hip hop songs but usually they just don't really fit the Halloween theme. It's the same reason not a lot of Black Metal if any really ends up here. Sure they're singing about the end of the world and shit but, they actually kind of mean it.

Not to say I don't love hip hop. Hell its my favorite genre, so I'm definitely excited when I have stuff to put up but I don't want to force it in.

This track is a remix of Notorious B.I.G. and Eminem over the Exorcist theme. It's a pretty good remix and Cookin' Soul has put out more than a few killer remix albums. They're from Spain and most of their production has been for European artists but I guess recently they put out a few songs with Mac Miller.

It's hard to find a lot of funky or soulful yet spooky songs. I'm not entirely sure why, maybe its because funk and soul usually sounds so upbeat, even if many of the songs are about depressing subjects. This is a great song from the Spinners from way back in 1970.

I'm hoping I'll be able to dig up a little more hiphop and soul for the blog. I have a lot of stuff and sometimes its hard figuring out what's worthy, what's good and what I can actually manage to get up. So far I'm still one song behind, but I'll try to use this week to catch up before my birthday this Friday, yet another reason this is the best month of the year.

I am really excited to post this song. Tijuana Panthers are a cool garage/surf type sounding band out of the L.A. area. They along with the Growlers and a few other bands have a cool garage/lofi type thing going down in that area.

Like most garage/surf groups they took the time to write a horror influenced song. It's one of their catchiest songs and reminds me a lot of the movies that would regularly appear on MST3K.

They just put out an album called Max Baker, if you dig Creature, you'll dig the whole album.

This is a track fro a very weird fuzzy german band called the Vampires of Dartmoore. I'm not really sure what's happening, its just a rock record but it sounds like a soundtrack to a bad early 70s horror film that should have starred Christopher Lee.

This track is titled Hallo, Mister Hitchcock. I still remember watching Alfred Hitchcock presents on Nick at Night when I was a kid. It was kind of dark, and kind of scary, but I never really knew what was going on entirely since I was only around 7-8.

This is a live version of Werewolf Barmitzvah by the Roots. It was done live on Jimmy Fallon which I have to say is surprisingly underrated for a late night show. The man isn't a very good actor but he actually makes the late night gig work. It helps that he has one of the best bands in the world performing every night.

This song was originally on 30 Rock and here the Roots covered it in a short version. Questlove, the Roots' drummer put out a free download full of tracks they had covered on Jimmy Fallon and this was one of em.

I always loved this song because its just as ridiculous as many of the 50's and 60's novelty occult songs, although admittedly not quite as good. But the lyrics are so dumb they're good.

Cannibal in the Headhunters are one of many forgotten (undeservedly so) garage soul bands from the early to mid 60's. They had a minor hit with a cover of Land of 10,000 Dances, but they have a lot of great material.

This is a great swinging little R+B song. My favorite part is the falsetto "Devillllll, In Disguise" chorus. The band reminds me a lot of some of Ray Charles stuff like Hit the Road Jack.

I make it a point to see any band I like. So far that has been a lot of bands from everything from George Clinton to the Beastie Boys to Guided By Voices. There's a part of me that is a little bit dissapointed I'll never get to see Bobby Boris Pickett play the Monster Mash live. At least he left an album's worth of music in addition to the Monster Mash.

This song, Sinister Stomp is a lot like the Monster Mash. It's not as catchy but it has this great backing vocal that floats behind the chorus of female singers. It shares a lot of the "Boris" cadence but is a great companion to the Monster Mash.

Back again, the posts are gonna start amping up here in time for Halloween. I'm excited to have some downtime this weekend and am gonna get working on finishing some remixes and mixes I'm putting together for the big weekend. Shameless plug time: If any of you readers out there want to share this and get some more readers in here, that'd be awesome and most appreciated.

This track reminds me of another one I posted a few years agoc called Ghostrider by Suicide. Suicide was more of a no wave band as opposed to the surf garage rock that Thee Oh Sees play.

If you dig this kind of thing there are a lot of bands with this particular sound and a lot of them are out of the San Francisco area. A band I posted a track from earlier in the year, The Fresh and Onlys are also out of San Francisco and just put out a new album called Play It Strange.

I was really surprised when my Dad referred me to some Good ELO songs one day on Facebook. I posted how I needed to listen to them and he told me to listen to Jungle which turned out to be a fantastic song. I instantly got into a bunch more ELO. It's a lot like latter era Beatles music with a little bit more of a classic rock feel as well. This track is originally from Face the Music.

Maybe I've managed to hide it, maybe I haven't. But I am a huge fan of Ghostbusters. It's easily my favorite movie. Although this probably isn't a huge surprise to anyone reading a Halloween music blog. The movie, the cartoon and even the soundtrack were all awesome. I own easly to many weird odd Ghostbusters collectibles and I'm not even super addicted, just some figurines, trading cards and comics here and there on the side, I'm sure plenty of other collectors got me beat.

Out of the four Ghostbusters, it's Winston that gets the least love. Played by Ernie Hudson, he was left off of the original movie poster, was the last to be released of the New Ghostbusters figures. It's sad really as I don't consider him any less of a character. Especially in the cartoon where some of his stories were among the best. Check out the Real Ghostbusters cartoon if you can get ahold of it by the way. A lot of the episodes feature very strong writing including some by J Michael Straczynski.

This track is a simple remix of the current Duck Sauce track Barbara Streissand. It was made by Castewar from Proton Charging a Ghostbusters web site. In the original, the audio in the break calls out Barbara Streissand but this remix calls out the 4th Ghostbuster Winston Zeddemore!

The Almighty Defenders are a supergroup of sorts that consists of Members from King Khan and the Shrines and The Black Lips. Both groups are garage type bands but King Khan has a little more soul and R and B and the Black Lips are a little bit more punk and folk.

This is snarling driving number that may or may not be named after Beetlejuice. I'm not really sure but they sing the title and chug along with a solid groove. That's good enough for me.

I know I'm currently a few posts behind. I was a little under the weather and didn't manage to get blogginb but promise to get caught up soon.

I'm not sure what it was exactly in the 50's and early 60's that created such a meld between both sci-fi and rockabilly. I think it must have been that both were predominantly mediums directed at teenagers and most of the rockabilly musicians were in their late teens and early twenties so they were writing about the safe cheesy films they'd catch at the drive-in or theater.

I'm lucky enough that there's a great drive-in not far from I live that's called the Vali-hi that features 3 movies a night all summer long for only 8 dollars. They've got videogames, cheap concessions and todays modern day drive-in film, the summer blockbuster. I've seen some terrible movies there, most notably when I saw the most recent Indiana Jones and spent the majority of the movie laughing and making fun of how bad it was.

The Black Angels are pretty good for a blog like this. Pretty much every song they make is full of droning, buzzing guitars. This is probably one of the most upbeat songs they have and even it is still a little scary.

It's off of their new LP Phosphene Dream, their third they've put out since 2004. They're from Austin and are basically a hybrid of psych, stoner rock and garage rock. I've amazingly yet to see them live but I think they'd make for a good show.

This is a unique track done by Phantom Planet for the soundtrack to the Xbox game Stubbs the Zombie. Its a bizarre album as it has some scary type songs but mostly a lot of covers of old 50's songer by modern bands. Some of them are surprisingly cool especially the Orangemen's take on Mr. Sandman. Which is just an amazing song and one that always makes me thing of Back to the Future.

I could never tell if I thought Phantom Planet was a good band or not. They weren't terrible. I probably doesn't matter though as I'm sure they did well enough off being the band that did the theme song to the O.C.

This is a track of one of the multiple Munsters albums from back in the sixties. I thought this would be an appropriate choice for this Halloween since it appears that they may reboot the show for the second time after that stint in the late 80's. That reboot ran for surprisngly longer than I think anyone would have thought.

If they do reboot it again, I should probably be ashamed to admit this but I'd probably watch it for sure. Sigh. I'm a sucker for that stuff, but its not like I don't watch plenty of bad tv.

This is one of the songs from Horror/Novelty music legend Zacherly. It is probably the most upbeat account of murdering a woman and then burying her corpse you'll ever hear. Boisterous laughter, bopping sax and that late 50's harmony backing vocals making deposing of a body sound like the most natural thing in the world.

Most of the songs have been posted sometime in the past but some haven't and this isn't just a zip folder of tracks, its a full mix, put it on and let it play for 54 minutes. Why 54 minutes? Sometimes I forget how much I like old school Doo Wop music from the 50s. I like the vocals sound a lot like Gospel if not done as well. Then there's always the bass guys that seem to be hitting an octave lower then you'd even think possible. This song is what I imagine to play at Beauty Pageants that take place in spooky haunted mansions. Its so bizarre, what's weird is I'm not sure if its supposed to be a novelty song or not.

First off I want to let everyone know since this is an extra special long Halloween due to both Daylight savings and the ability to party on Friday and Saturday my goal is to have my mix done and posted by tomorrow, but it might be thursday if it's not solid by then. A Hip hop double post, this track is from Dana Dane from back in 1987 off of Dana Dane with Fame. I gotta admit I'd be a Dana Dane fan probably just cause we share the same name but this is a quality album and Nightmares is an pretty good hiphop song for Halloween so I can appreciate that too.

It was Cinderfella Dana Dane that was the big hit on this album. He's still around and recently there was a True Hip Hop stories with Dana Dane produced by D-Nice. If you dig Hiphop you should check them out as they're beautifully filmed and the stories are great tales of early history.

There's a lot of crazy rappers out there, that wear weird costumes and makeup, but barely anyone out there raps like Killer Mike. This track is off his debut album Monster. Just this year he released Underground Atlanta which features Mike and a variety of Atlanta MCs. His best two albums to date have been Pledge Allegiance to the Grind 1 and 2. 1 is a double album and still manages to be one of the better releases this decade.

He raps hard but smart and has recently signed with T.I. on his Grand Hustle imprint after previously being with Outkast. My biggest fear is that it will take forever for his followup to Pledge to come out, but if it does I can assume it will only be better just as long as he doesn't try to crossover much if at all.

This track is from Danny Hutton who was in charge of Hanna-Barbera Records before joining Three Dog Night. It's a very weird song given the time it came out. You sounds like a lot of records from the British Invasion and has some tight horns and great guitar lick. The vocals on the track really stand out. Hutton releases a soulful croon and then hits some deep notes as he exclaims "Monster Shinnnn Diiig!". Definately great track.

Later he would join Three Dog Night who are a group I don't believe is underappreciated. One of my favorite movie moments is in Devil's Rejects when Shambala comes on before the movie really gets dark. I'm not a huge fan of Rob Zombie's directing but he can put together amazing soundtracks.

Straight from Cut Copy's last record, I'm digging most of this song. Not all of it perfectly gels but the chorus is pretty amazing. They have put out two really solid records and combine a little electronic vocals and feel with indie tendencies and sometimes epic choruses. What's interesting is although its very electronic oriented, you can listen to it hanging out at home and it doesn't feel out of place. You don't feel like you need neon lights all over the place or a fog machine to enjoy them.

Okay so this one isn't entirely werewolves dancing and vampires drinking spiked blood punch. But it it's called D.E.M.O.N.S. and the track which is produced by Black Milk is thoroughly spooky. It's got that undertone that is total head nod city but still has that cold dark in the dead of winter feel. The track is originally from Elzhi's album The Preface. Elzhi is originally part of Slum Village who worked with J Dilla among others before breaking up/going on hiatus.

The image is a gig poster by Brian Mercer. Get his posters they are awesome and super cheap. The price which is usually around 10-15 includes shipping!

Pretty sure he could be singing about a human apocalypse and it would just sound like a garage rock bop and would definately have to feature a little sax solo. Which makes anything sound upbeat when played like it's yakkity sax.

One of the things I've found as I've delved into the realm of supernatural and Halloween novelty music of the 60's is that it had quite an overlap with the surf rock craze. Many of the same bands or session musicians played on Monster themed music as did surf records. And when a genre like surf rock reached the ocean barren landscape of Minnesota you know it had to hit pretty much everywhere. Thankfully the same could be said of odd novelty songs.

Igor Goes Surfing manages to combine the best of both genres. A little bit of a Igor impression along with a slick little surf lick. I think my favorite image to come out of this is Igor making a trip to the beach and Igor playing with Sharks in the ocean. Then all of a sudden a flushing sound it made. The best part is the send off, "Where E-Gores, I-Gores".

This is a track by Mr Fab off of the Bride of Monster Mash Compilation from a few years back. The track is originally titled Cannibal Zombie Mom but the thing is I'm almost sure the lyrics say Cannibal Zombie Mob? Let me know if you think you can discern it for sure. It's a cool mash of some surf rock, a little shaking electronic beat and an echoey growl about a zombie mob or mom. Mob makes more sense given the context. Let me know what you here.

By the way I know sometimes I'm having to post 2 in 1 day instead of 1 every day. I just get sidetracked or haven't been home. It was my birthday a couple days back so I haven't been home and ready to post as much.

Finally a little Monster Soul. With this track I have no doubt it would have been a perfect bedrock for a little Sam Cooke style soul. I was almost amazed how solid this band is on this track. It's not quite as good as some of the guys Cooke had backing him, but its got some surprisingly solid session work here. Part of Don Hinson and the Rigormorticians.

I'm a big fan of the horns and they really make this song shout. Just a little twist on one of the traditional 60s dances, Monster Jerk features a very Peter Lorre impression talking about the now passe bird and ditching it in favor of The Jerk.

This is...one of the reasons teenage boys used to dig comics. Wow. But the internet ruined this for all the apparently sex starved guys at Marvel. Still the artwork is pretty badass. I dig the look of late 70s to mid 80s comics. And not necessarily for the busty revealing costumes.

So far I think I have yet to post a little reggae track. Ken Boothe sounds like he got burned by the Devil on this track. "Saying you're a good thing, But I know you're bad!". The best part is the chorus when the backup singers come in, "Youuurrrrre Eeeevvilllll." She might not be supernatural, but this woman is clearly no good.

This is a great old school Rockabilly track from Bobby Bare. Currently you might have heard of his son Bobby Bare Jr. who's been recording a lot of different albums the last few years and touring. He's not as country as his dad though and tends to veer all over the place stylistically.

This track is hot. A little sneer, a little screaming, some hot piano stabs and a bouncing guitar hook make this one of my favorite tracks I've posted this year. Put on your black leather jacket, grease that hair and find a drag race.

This is a scorching psychedelic from Richard Delvy. Now if I got my facts straight this is Richard Delvy formerly of The Challengers a pretty epic surf rock band from the early 60s. This is very reminiscent of a more polished Roky Erickson. And I would imagine sans electro shock therapy. It's a great track that starts talking about space exploration and then reveals green slime come to earth. So basically the song is the plot to the Blob. 2 minutes and no Dillon brother so it's better than the remake at the very least.

They're from Philly and have a few shows coming up in the area this month I believe so check em out if you hapy to be on the East Coast. I really dig their albums. It's pretty much the kind of music made to drive a 1966 Charger through a muggy summer night in only a night in which the bars were filled with dancing, drinking and smoking werewolves and other creatures of the night.

This song may be one of the less danceable songs I post. But it's some solid rock from Sparklehorse who have released this in 2006 off of their album Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain which is surprisingly not even close to the longest album name I've heard. This past year members of Sparklehorse worked with Dangermouse to release Dark Night of the Soul which technically never recieved the proper release it was due to.

Lord Luther's I Was a Teenage Creature has some fairly standard music bop behind his vocals. But the what comes to the forefront on this track is his voice. He really elevates the song with a pretty amazing croon. Backed by the howling, growls and grotesque laughs and screams this reminds me for some reason of being a kid and watching old TV shows on Nick at Night. If I could find an image of Bob Denver dressed as a werewolf if such a thing exists that'd be perfect.

What I really want is a wacky Halloween Pop resurgence. I can't imagine a world in which that happens but if it does I will be most excited.

Ah the late great Lon Chaney Jr. I think that might be my favorite monster movie star name. Boris Karloff is definately up there as is Bela Lugosi but those sound almost too strange. It's the simplicity that makes me think Lon Chaney could have been a basketball player or something else. This song is pretty fantastic. Some solid froggy voiced growling by Lon Chaney with a girl group backing up vocals.

I love the concept of the song as well being the famous movie monsters during Christmas. My favorite parts are "the zombies made out with the sleigh and all", and "Drac got his cape, Frankie promised to behave, and the Wolfman was happy now he can shave". Not a bad track for Halloween or Chirstmas. I think you might agree It's pretty hard to listen to this song without going into some kind of awkward twist like sixties dance.

The next track is what was one of my favorite songs of one of my favorite albums. Back in 1995 I was 11 and got an overpriced Odelay at the Mall of America. I remember I liked Where It's At, but my favorite song was definately Devil's Haircut. It had a crazy video that was shot like a blaxploitation film, a funky harmonica and the laidback snarl of beck. The fuzzy guitar finishes off the groove. There's also the fact that Devil's Haircut sounds totally badass as a song when you're 11 even if the lyrics were pretty much over my head, or over everyone's head. It's not exactly like Beck makes clear statements with all his songs.

I think between the ages of 11 and 14 I probably listened to that album about a billion times. I almost can't listen to it anymore even know I still know it's awesome. Now my favorite song is Jack-Ass which I highly reccomend as well as the Mariachi version on the recently released Odelay Remastered edition.

I realize I've been a little late and behind, but trust me, October has 31 days and you will have 31 posts. Unless I get bitten by a zombie or something, in which case all updates will merely be "Brainsssss..." Repeated over and over. The next track I have is Dead Man Coming by Evil Nine and featuring a guest spot by Toastie Taylor. It's not quite lyrically spooky but tell me this wouldn't make the perfect soundtrack to a few humans fleeing down a darkened ally with zombies in pursuit as others creep out of the darkness and join the hunt.

Evil Nine also have a great track called They Live which I posted last year. I think they are very underated and am looking forward to their next album as they do a great job of pulling together electronic music with hiphop and even dancehall without veering into territory that they can't excel in.

The Deadly Snakes are probably one of the best garage rock bands ever. They put out 4 great albums from 1999 through 2005 and then split up. There Goes Your Corpse Again is off of Ode to Joy. Part garage rock part scuzzy R and B everytime they use horns they manage to make them sound just as washed out as the vocals or guitar parts. The best part is backup vocalists making it sound like a an alternate universe version of something that would have been on American bandstand circa 1959.

I did it.
Nearly 60 Minutes of Spooky themed sonically horrifying sounds for my favorite holiday of the year. It's my first attempt at any kind of mix, and I'm confident with much of the song selection, however I know it's rough around the edges, but I definitely learned something doing this and hope you find time to enjoy it this Halloween. Round Robin's I'm the Wolfman is a great precurso to Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London. Howling and hooting over a hard driving guitar riff and bass riff, its got a little more too it than some of the other novelty Halloween songs of way back.

Damn you Remco, why aren't you still in business. The action figure looks pretty rad, plus the packaging is awesome. I miss old school figures although the new generation of vinyl figures are cool, but I get tired of the same iteration of figures just with different paint schemes. Its a little boring too me.

On another side note having nothing to do with the song, I just finished watching Nightmare on Elm Street 5 Dream Child, and it ends with a Kool Moe Dee song for absolutely no reason than Hollywood thought it would be cool to milk hiphop culture at the time. Don't get me wrong, I love Kool Moe Dee, and I love that the Fat Boys did a song for Nightmare on Elm Street 4, but the pandering of the song selection was just too funny. Further addition to said sidenote: Nightmare on Elm Street 5 sucks. Still not as bad as 2 though.

First let me know if anything with old div share isn't working. And second, I hope to post my first mix I've ever done. A tribute to Halloween. It's coming either Thursday or Friday as an end cap to this Halloween madness.

This may be the first Groovie Ghoulies post in the Ghost Town's history. Surprising since they are unequivocally the heirs to the Cramp's horror rock mantle, well, they would've been had they not broken up most recently. Nonetheless this is one of my favorite's. It's about the character's monkey, who starts yet another Zombie outbreak. Damn Dirty Apes right? I think they started the Iraq War too. (George Bush Insult unintended)

Werewolve's by Night of London

No the song title is Werewolve's of London. But the pic is from one of my favorite comics, Wereowlf by Night. It got a decent run in the 70's on Marvel and as far as I know he's returned from time to time to guest in a few comics. And he may have been in the new brief Nick Fury's Howling Commandos.

The song is a cover of Warren Zevon's great song Werewolve's of London. It's kind've a novelty but the hook is amazing, and it's hard not to Howl along with the song, plus I'm of the opinion no one has a bad howling voice. This version is done by Magnolia Electric Co and can be found on their Hard to Love a Man EP. Magnolia Electric Co also goes by Jason Molina and sometimes as Songs Ohia. They're all generally a project or another by Jason Molina and great sad psuedo alt-country-folk. If you're looking for some more music check out the Devil's Music. I have a further explanation in the post below but he's Dracula to my Wolfman Jack.

The Beast

Much love must go out to The Devil's Music doing a similar thing to my own blog here and the officially unofficial blog most hated by Tipper Gore (In a good way, Twisted Sister...look it up on wikipedia). But I digress. Go there for more of you're demonic musical needs. You just have to Wanna Rock.

The song I got up for this post is especially appropriate considering the mention of The Devil's music. It's called The Beast and it's off of Aphrodite's Child's album 666. Aphrodite's Child is a most righteous band, with one of its members being Greek Super Legend (at least as far as I've read) Vangelis who is more than likely most notable for his contribution to the film Chariots of Fire in composing the epic score. He was also responsible for writing much of the music in Aphrodite's Child.

Party in the Morgue

This song sounds like it'd be perfect for a Matrix style action scene with way too much CGI, maybe some naked under earth raving, and lots of leather trenchcoats. But hey, that also sounds a little like Halloween, not to mention the frequent alias chaning Kool Keith at the helm and the chorus encouraging you to Party in the Morgue. That's what I call a song custom made for Halloween.

Speaking of Kool Keith he just put out a new cd as Dr. Doom. Party in the Morgue however comes courtesy of The Undertakerz album or the Blade Trinity soundtrack.

Trick or Treat

I probably shouldn't disparage the band I'm about to write about even though this one song is halfway decent. It's from the "Supergroup" Fastway. Personally with the exception of anything Damon Albarn has ever been in Supergroups are always called supergroups because of the talent the band is composed of and so rarely of the output.

Fastway was thought to be epic, much like expectations were initially high for Audioslave, but ultimately Fastlane sputtered through a decade when even a band called RATT could be successful. Still they did the soundtrack to the Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper starring Trick or Treat. The title track is presented here. It's a movie I haven't seen yet, but after working my way through most of the Nightmare on Elm Street series recently, I need a break from awful 80s horror movies.

Touched by a Demon

I'm a big fan of the Young Werewolves. Sing and Shout rock and roll at it's finest. Its just like the Ramones if they were into more early soul and sang about Demons and stuff. It's the kind of music that was MADE for me.

The above pic is from Lost Boys Reign of Frogs. A short 4 part comic series that came out around the same time as the sequel to the original Lost Boys. The sequel which was generally pretty bad, was still ultimately...pretty fun. I wouldn't recommend watching it with your brain on, but for a low budget direct to DVD pic it wasn't all that bad.

The Horror Flick

A new track from Chamillionaire's Mixtape Messiah 4. Honestly one of the most underrated MC's out in my opinion, not to mention his always solid mixtapes which are usually light on subpar guests and high on Chamillionaire's rhymes. The Horror has a spooky beat that sounds like a Houston-ized horror soundtrack beat. Imagine John Carpenter in the studio with Pimp C.

The picture above is from the remake of the 1974 film Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I haven't seen the remake yet because I want to see the original first, however I'm a little scared to try watching the original alone. I can dig spooky shit, but when it gets down to the middle of the country gore type stuff, I grew up a little out of the neighbor to neighbor houses and 5 miles from a supermax prison so I still tend to get more scared during those type of flicks.

Hayride

Junior over at Ear Fuzz reminded me once again about Exuma and he has too many songs that would be perfect posts for the Ghost Town. However instead of choosing one of his island chants about zombies and voodoo I elected to choose what I've heard described as one of his worst songs.

But I don't think it's that bad. It's really sacharine and kind've cheesy but it's a hayride love song. So more than being totally appropriate it also showcases that Exuma had a beautiful singing voice despite the fact that he routinely sang in a gravely wail.

The other reason I wanted to post this is my many memories of a kid going on haunted hayrides once October came. I'm not sure if everyone has hayrides all over the US or other places, but it's a pretty big fall staple in Minnesota and a good time in the crisp October air.

Dracula

So far it's been light on reggae or ska and since I want to make sure you have some island riddims for your Halloween night, I present to you Lucky Dube's Dracula. Lucky Dube definately has to be one of my favorite dancehall artists along with Anthony B and Luciano. There's so much absolutely amazing music still coming out of Jamaica, it always amazes. Not enough of it is about werewolves however, but maybe someday we'll have the reggae version of gothabilly. I can hope can't I?

Haunt

You know I love Roky Erickson come Halloween time because of his lyrics that are about superantural phenomena but I'd like him just the same for his 50's like guitar parts and wailing voice. I think I've mentioned before how unfortunate it is that his lyrics, in the late 70s and going on, are most likely to be attributed to the time he spend in a psych ward undergoing shock therapy. A healthy dose of blame can also go to his drug consumption, especially psychadelics. He's has a long life and recently its been on the up-swing so that's good to know. I just hope I get the chance to see him someday. He's a true character in the history of rock 'n' roll. If you dig this look for his other stuff solo and as part of the 13th Floor Elevators.

Polaris - The Monster's Loose

I posted this song once before, but seeing as how that was 2 full years ago, I had to post it again. It's from a beautiful amazing cd by a band called Polaris. They made an entire album of material for The Adventures of Pete and Pete on Nickelodeon. It's one of the greatest TV shows ever created in my opinion and all the music used not only the stuff made by Polaris but the contributions from Racecar, Nice and the Magnetic Fields among others was transcendent.

I decided to post the Monster's Loose due to the fantastic episode Halloweenie. The plot of the episode is that one brother thinks he may be getting to old for Halloween while the other embraces it at its fullest. The mythology and acting as well as the cinematography is amazing. If you've never seen the show I can't more thoroughly recommend renting or buying some of the DVDs or acquiring by other means.

Suicide - Ghost Rider

Sidenote (and by sidenote I mean headnote): If you're reading and at least a few people are judging by the downloads, please feel free to leave me a comment, otherwise I feel alone like I'm in a darkened house and there's not even the company of a supernatural Serial Killer to keep me company.

This is a song from a band called Suicide. I've only recently delved into them and a lot of no wave stuff. I was initially surprised at how much I liked it. No wave is almost a side reaction to the punk scene of the time or at least that's what I've been able to understand it as. Not against punk but more of another direction. Listening to Suicide I get a feeling that whether or not alot of current bands no it or not Suicide is their spiritual ancestor.

The droning, humming, and buzzing that Suicide sends through their instruments is something that I think I can say I hear in bands like Animal Collective or TV on the Radio. Suicide put out 2 albums and both are really rad. Underneath it all I can also here a slight nod to garage rock too, or maybe its just some of the sludge, but I can't help but think that Suicide and the Sonics have a lot in common.

Big Daddy Kane - Dance With the Devil

Back with the ever impressive Big Daddy Kane, I wanted to drop some old school science with one of the greatest MCs of all time. Hands down he might be my favorite. And to this day, one of the best shows I've seen was Big Daddy Kane and I got in free which was just icing on the cake.

But I still remember to this day him using his song Ain't No Half Steppin' as a rallying cry to live life to the fullest. It was never something I had actually thought of in that context before but it really was awesome to hear him perform it and with a band that helped bring a really great sound to it. As good as it is on album it was one of the rare times where I could say the performance was almost better musically.

Car Chase Terror

So on to some music that is more spooky and less about spooky stuff. Car Chase Terror by M83 opens with a quote I can't quite identify but eventually the music begins and starts to swell, sythns come in along with some rapid fire drums. I've always liked M83 and after recently getting into Nine Inch Nails a little more, the two seem so similar to me. I think theres more of a metal and hard rock influence with Nine Inch Nails but if both bands were on tour with each other I don' think either's fans would be dissapointed. Eventually the song ends with the ominous quiet of a roadside swamp as a car speeds by in silence.

Freddy's Return

I wanted to make sure I got a song up by the Phantom Rockers as they are one of my favorite Gothabilly groups and I also was hoping I could post another song about Freddy since last years Fat Boys and Freddy Post.

I just got done watching Nightmare 2 and am almost done with Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Most recently I also watched the Scream trilogy. And I have a few thoughts about Wes Craven films, mostly that the first is so much better than the sequels. I did like the Scream films, but they seemed to get cheesier with every sequel and one of the things I don't really dig with the Nightmare/Friday the 13th/Halloween Sequels is the morphing of the characters from villians to near heroes. That's the problem, with every sequel the focus goes more and more from the protagonists to the villians.

But irregardless it's mostly mindless entertainment and I will always remember being scared to death merely from the commercial for Wes Craven's New Nightmare when I was 9. I could always watch uber violence like Terminator 2 when I was 8 and never fear fazed, but he haunting music and dark setting of horror films freaked me out until I got into my 20's.

Hayride to Hell - The Munsters Theme

So how is it there were two supernaturally themed sitcoms at the same time and we've yet to truly receive a new one since then. Sure there's been the reincarnation of the Munsters and the Addams Family Movies and Cartoon, but 40 years? Come on, it'd still be better than According to Jim or whatever else is coming in 89th in the ratings.

Anyways, the Munsters is a classic, however it's starting to get to the point where some people my generation or earlier may not have heard of it, and that scares me. I grew up on a combination of the new, and the old as when cable was just starting out all the old fifties, sixties and seventies shows were all in syndication and I remember loving the Munsters as well as Gilligan's Island and Get Smart among dozens of others.

Of all the covers I've heard of the Munsters theme song, and I have heard a surprising amount, Hayride to Hell's is one of the best. It's got a real hard chugging fuzz guitar that warms up right after a dark bassline. ♦♦

Runnin' From the Devil

So it's been a little heavy on the rockabilly and the old school but I have a couple tracks to go in a different direction coming up. The first is a little late 70's Funk/Disco track by the Ohio Players. It's called Runnin' from the Devil, and for some reason I can't imagine running form the devil while listening to this song without the person doing the running wearing bell bottoms and sequins, and Afros everywhere...even on the Devil. Of course the Ohio Players also have a couple other notable hits, including Fire, and Love Rollercoaster. However if you want a pure full on fire blowout, there's nothin' like FOPP. Comparable with even the most blazing Funkadelic tracks FOPP its pure fury.
